Your' to do' list - before help arrives.
- If possible, Find your :
- motherboard book
- driver disks
- operating system
- program disks
- startup disk
- All CD's and programs that originally
came with your computer
- A good idea is to keep all these items together in one spot - nice and safe away from magnets, computer accessories, heating/cooling elements.
- Back-up your data, music, pictures, etc. to a floppy or CD-RW.
You should back up your important files and documents on a regular basis - If your hard drive fails, you could lose all your data.
- Scan and defrag your C:\ drive (if possible).
Tips - Good to KnowDust!
Believe it or not, your computer collects dust - doesn't everything? This should be cleaned by a professional once a year - depending on your environment. Dust can clog your fans and that will eventually cause real problems.
Static Kills
Beware of E.S.D. (Electro Static Discharge) Static can cause intermittent problems with your computer.(Don't worry, unless you're inside the case.)
Computer cables can collect static (Sometimes a problem with high speed connections.)
Wipe down the hookup cables with an anti-static product. Do not just spray, use a soft cloth to apply.Keep Magnets on the fridge!
Magnets can destroy your monitor and your floppies. Be safe - keep anything magnetic away from your computer. Better safe than sorry.
What IS that noise???????
If your machine starts whistling and/or whining inside, get it checked, it could be one of the fans that cools the system. If the noise goes away, the fan may have stopped. You could overheat your power supply, CPU or fry motherboard. OUCH!Doing it yourself!
Not recommended!
The power supply stores High Voltage even when unplugged. E.S.D. can destroy your Motherboard, Ram, etc. A voice of experience can save time and $$$$.
So if you feel you are running into trouble, don't wait. today or call for assistance to fit your busy schedule - even in 'cottage country'.
